FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why does sleeping hurt after shoulder surgery?
It comes down to position. When you are upright during the day, gravity pulls your arm down and keeps the humeral head, the "ball" of the ball and socket, seated low in the joint. Lying flat takes that away. The ball drifts upward and pinches the tissue above it, which is usually already inflamed after surgery. At the same time, your shoulder settles behind the plane of your body, which pushes the joint forward and creates pain in the front. Those two things together are why most surgeons tell you to sleep propped up at an incline or in a recliner.
How does the NEST help?
The NEST holds you at a reclined angle in your own bed while supporting your operative arm in the position you set. The elbow support keeps the arm from drifting behind you, so the shoulder stays neutral and the joint stays quiet.
Can I use the NEST for non-surgical shoulder pain?
Yes. The NEST was designed around post-operative recovery, but the position problem it solves is the same one behind most nighttime shoulder pain. Patients use it for rotator cuff tears and tendinopathy, impingement, bursitis, frozen shoulder, AC joint pain, labral injuries, and shoulder arthritis, as well as for general shoulder discomfort that has not been formally diagnosed.
Does the NEST work with a sling?
Yes. The NEST works with any sling, including those with an abduction pillow or bar. Your sling sits on top of the arm support, so nothing needs to be removed or adjusted.
What size bed does it fit?
Any size. The NEST is self-contained and does not attach to the bed frame or mattress, so it works on a twin, a king, or a couch.
Can I sleep on my side with the NEST?
Yes. Place the curved bolster behind your back and rest the operative arm on the arm support. We recommend staying on your back for the first two weeks after surgery, or until your surgeon clears you.
How much does the NEST weigh?
About 8 lb shipped.
What if my NEST gets dirty?
Every NEST includes removable microfiber covers that are machine washable.
Can I return my NEST?
Because the NEST is a personal recovery device that sits against the skin, we cannot accept returns or exchanges once it has been used.
Is the NEST HSA/FSA eligible?
Not at this time.
